Car Insurances

Product Description
Car insurance offers protection against fire, theft and in some cases traffic accidents. Most car insurance policies provide liability coverage, uninsured and insured motorist, medical expenses, and comprehensive and collision cover. The amount of insurance needed depends on a lot of factors including the type of car, the age of the driver and if you have a car loan. Car loans ask for full coverage of the vehicle including comprehensive and collision to ensure the loan will be fully covered.

There are two types of car insurance. There is full coverage or “as needed.” Full coverage is a policy that lasts for six to twelve months before a policy renewal is needed. The “as needed” coverage is term insurance. You have the policy for a specific period of time such as a week or one month. This is a pay as you go option rather than paying for a full year of coverage when it is not needed.

Main Players
The main players in terms of car insurance currently include Direct Line, More Than, Swift Cover, Budget, Swintons and esure however the best one for you will depend on your individual circumstances. You should initially use a comparison website – such as the BUYability engine – to track down the best deals and then see what benefits are on offer from each.

Pros of Car Insurance

  • Your car is covered in the event of fire or theft and with comprehensive policies it is also covered for motor accidents.
  • The insurance pays for the damage to other vehicles should you crash into them.
  • Medical bills are covered should you require medical attention following an accident.
  • Additional options mean you can also insure the contents of your car against theft and vandalism.

Cons of Car Insurance

  • Car insurance is required by the law so you have to pay whatever the insurance companies quote.
  • Some types of car insurance may not fully cover you for damage done during an accident or if the car is stolen.
  • You generally have to pay an excess in addition to the cost of the insurance itself.
  • Car insurance can be very expensive – especially for young drivers and those with performance cars.

Things to Consider When Choosing a Provider
First, is the company well known? Does it have a good reputation for paying out claims? Do they make the claim process easy? What deductible do they require for damage to the windshield, or another part of the car? These questions need to be asked when you look for a provider, and answered. The answers will determine what company and policy is better for you.

Discount companies are not always the best. They may be well known due to television ads, but they do not always pay out or provide the right amount of coverage. Typically discount car insurance companies will tell you what the minimum coverage is for the area you live in and offer you this. The minimum medical insurance may not be enough to cover hospital bills. You should try to get the best policy that you can comfortably afford as skimping on the price could backfire in the event of a bad accident.
