Energy Suppliers

Product Description
Energy suppliers are the companies that supply gas and electricity to your home. Many of them offer the same kind of price plans and benefits however others, such as the Green Energy suppliers, offer that little bit something extra – electricity from renewable sources. The major energy suppliers are constantly competing for your custom and may offer additional discounts for switching to them from another supplier.

Main Players
There are numerous energy suppliers in the UK however a lot of them are restricted to geographical regions. The big names include British Gas, nPower, Scottish Power, EON, EDF and Scottish & Southern. Green energy suppliers include Ecotricity, Green Energy UK and Good Energy. There are other companies available as well that haven’t been mentioned here.

Pros of Energy Suppliers

  • Most of the big names can supply gas and electricity which makes it more convenient for you as a customer.
  • Their constant competitiveness means that they often advertise special offers and discounts for limited periods.
  • It is normally quite easy to switch between energy suppliers when a better deal comes along.

Cons of Energy Suppliers

  • Some companies don’t like you switching to another supplier and so charge a leaving fee when you do.
  • Prices are very high at the present time however they know we have no choice but to pay them.

Things to Consider when Choosing a Provider
There are loads of things to consider, the most important of which is probably price at the moment. It might be worth using the BUYability comparison engine to see which provider can offer you the best deal before making a decision. Some people save themselves hundreds of pounds each year by switching suppliers and so it is well worth a look.

Other important considerations include the availability of customer support, any charges that might apply if you want to switch at a later date, the methods of payment that are accepted, the different plans that are on offer and any promotions that are being advertised. Some energy suppliers give discounts for paying by direct debit, having both gas and electricity from them and having paperless billing and these factors alone can save you a good few pounds each month.

Green energy providers are also a consideration as they not only supply electricity and gas from renewable sources, they also tend to invest part of their profits in the development of future UK projects. They are also a way of reducing your carbon footprint by a couple of tonnes each year which is great from the environment. Most of the green energy providers are so far restricted to supplying electricity but this green energy rarely costs any more than the energy you’re paying for now.

BUYability Summary
The vast majority of us need the services of an energy supplier and so you should research the big names thoroughly to get the best deal available. Check out their price plans, their discounts and their most recent promotions before making a decision and be sure to read the small print of the agreement for any charges and fees that aren’t well advertised. The newer Green Energy suppliers are also worth a look as they have the added advantage of benefiting the environment as well as your pocket.
