Debt Problems and How to Avoid Them

Debt problems don’t just happen over night. It often takes months and even years to get to the stage that constitutes a problem but if those that are in trouble with debts were honest with themselves then they’ll probably admit they saw it coming. So what exactly constitutes a debt problem?

Having debts is not in itself a problem. Being unable to pay the monthly payments on your debts is a problem and if the situation gets serious enough it can lead to legal procedures and even bankruptcy. A lot of people today can’t say off the top of their head how much debt they have and it is this kind of person that is most likely to end up with an unmanageable debt problem – simply because they fail to manage their debts properly.

So how do you avoid debt problems from occurring in the first place?

Manage Your Money
People with good money management skills tend to rely less on credit than those who aren’t so skilled. It is important to know exactly how much you earn each month, how much you have to pay out and how much you have left over. If you have debts to pay then it is vital that the monthly payments aren’t more than you have left after you have deducted the essentials from your wages. If they are then you have a problem already. If not and you can afford your debts then you’re on the right track but you need to keep the payments manageable to avoid future problems.

Pay with Cash Whenever Possible
If you haven’t got the cash then don’t buy the item! Using cash instead of credit is the easiest way to avoid debt problems and although it may mean that you have to go without a few luxuries, at least you won’t be swimming in debt for a good number of years to come.

Change Providers
Use the BUYability comparison engine to find cheaper alternatives for your loans, credit cards, utility providers, mortgage provider and insurances. The more you can cut down your monthly outgoings the less likely you are to suffer with debt problems – especially if you stop spending on credit as well!

Ask for Help
If you find yourself in the early stage of uncontrollable debt then you need to ask for help while you still can. Some of the credit card issuers and loan providers will lower your payments temporarily if you phone them and explain your situation. A few will even stop interest charges for a while if you have been a good customer in the past. Asking for help may mean your credit limit is reduced but at this stage you’re probably in enough debt anyway so this shouldn’t be a problem.

Should your debt problem be past the stage of asking the individual companies for help then you can always phone one of the free advice helplines e.g. the CCCS or the National Debtline. They will be able to explain your options and how to progress so hopefully your debt problem doesn’t end up blemishing your credit report in the future.
