Cardiff Parents Cough Up Most Says Tesco Bank Research

Published: Friday, June 11th, 2010

Tesco Bank research has revealed that parents in Cardiff fork out the most when it comes to the big day and their progeny decide to marry.

The latest piece of Tesco Bank research revealed that of all the cities in the UK, Cardiff is home to the most supportive parents over the wedding expenses. So when they ask the question, “…oh, what’s occurring…”, and get the answer, “…I’m marrying Blondwin, me…”, they expect to pick-up a large part of the tab.

The top five cities with the parents paying the most are as follows:

  1. Cardiff 61%
  2. Leeds 57%
  3. Portsmouth 56%
  4. Oxford 55%
  5. Manchester 54%

But the Tesco Bank research also revealed that times are a changing and most couples (52%) are now more likely to pay for their wedding themselves, and not get mum and dad to foot the bill.

And the Tesco Bank research revealed that it can be quite a sizable bill, with couples paying out an average of nearly £5,000 to pay for their wedding. What’s more, it takes roughly ten months for most couples to save that kind of money.

Furthermore, the Tesco Bank research also discovered that it’s no longer convention that the bride’s parent’s pay, with less than one third (27%) holding to the tradition.

As for the place with the tightest parents – so to speak – that is Norwich, where a touch under 65% of parents pay the wedding bill.

Head of Savings & Investments at Tesco Bank, Jeremy Sutton, explained:
“Planning your wedding day can be quite stressful, particularly when it comes to managing finances. Saving regularly each month can really make a difference. Our research shows that most couples are cutting their cloth in the run up to the big day by saving money where they can.”

A final point from the Tesco Bank research report showed that when it comes to couples starting to save for the wedding, meals and holiday are some of the first things to be cut back.
